About Steve

Hi! I’m Steve Hughes and I created this website to share my journey with ALS. But I wanted to do more.

I have worked with technology for over thirty years. My wife and her dad helped kick off my career with Microsoft Access. I then went into consulting, eventually specializing in data architecture and business intelligence. When I couldn’t work anymore because of ALS, I wasn’t sure what to do next.

This time my daughter Kristyna inspired me. She made some nice updates to our shared data blog. I realized that I could use my skills to build a website to share our ALS story and serve as a resource hub for others dealing with this disease. This project gives me purpose and the opportunity to serve others.

Our family

I have been married to my beautiful bride for over thirty years. We met in college and have lived in St. Meinrad, IN; Bloomington, MN; Brno, Czech Republic; Burnsville, MN; and now Frankfort, KY. We raised our family together in Minnesota. Sheila is now my primary caregiver. This is not how we planned this stage of our life, but God has a plan. Because of that we have hope.

Sheila and I have four adult children. All of them are married. If you want to hear more subscribe to our annual Hughes Herald newsletter.

Website goals

When I initially created the website, my primary goal was to create a central location to direct people to who wanted to know about our journey. I prioritized links to our other social media locations. However, as Sheila and I started answering more questions, I realized it could be so much more. Here’s the updated goals for the website.

  1. Share our story, past and present.
  2. Share our tools, resources, and answers.
  3. Give me a place to share whatever I want t.
