Key verses

Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT)

Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Acts of the Apostles 20:33-35 (NLT)

I have never coveted anyone’s silver or gold or fine clothes. You know that these hands of mine have worked to supply my own needs and even the needs of those who were with me. And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

Pursue Jesus, work hard, give generously

Jesus warns us about the dangers of pursuing wealth. It won’t last. He gives us the best alternative. Pursue him. What we pursue reveals the desires of our hearts.

I really like Paul’s take on money and work. First, he reinforces the teaching of Jesus by pointing he did not desire other people’s wealth or things. Second, this doesn’t keep him from working hard. We should work to take care of our needs and the needs of our families. Working hard is one more way to demonstrate that we follow Jesus. Lastly, Paul worked hard so he could give to those in need.

This is the challenge of wealth and Christianity. Do we give more than we accumulate? We are called to work hard AND give generously. If we do this, we will be blessed.

Parting thoughts

This is not easy. I have worked hard but did I give generously? I took care of my family, which is good. Like most Americans, I accumulated many things. The challenge remains do I show my heart’s desire for Jesus in my wealth?
