SPEAX

Steve used the SPEAX device to amplify his voice while wearing a mask with his non-invasive ventilator which helped him communicate. This device is not generally available anymore.

Description

I used this voice amplification system with masks that covered my mouth. The mic sticks to the mask and is disposable. It was only available with a prescription when I used it, but it was not covered by insurance.

Disappointingly, the company that created SPEAX was not able to continue making them in 2026. They sold their inventory to a medical supplier in Australia. There may be some available at ALS clinics as well. I recommend looking at ChatterVox as an alternative option. This is a sad situation where a good tool could not be maintained in the marketplace.

Here is the distributor in Australia if you are in that area.
