Helping my come and go from the house
I added the Olideauto Automatic Door Opener to the door from our house into our garage to enable my wife to come and go from the house on her own. She has lived with ALS since 2021 and uses a power wheelchair for mobility. I was still working at the time and was concerned that something could happen, and she would need to get out when I was away. This product offers a wireless remote control, wall pushbuttons, and can have a motion sensor added as an option. In order to make it work through Alexa, I added another product to this with a contact that tells it to open. The eKyro Smart Garage Door Opener includes position switches to confirm when the door is open / closed. This opener cost about $35 which was much less expensive than buying a door opener that had the WiFi option built in.
Installation and placement
The instructions were pretty straight-forward, and the manufacturer has YouTube videos that show the installation process. When I had a question, I sent them an email and actually ended up having a phone call with the man that was in the videos. The device is powered with a corded plug, so you need to have a receptacle. I did not have one near the door, so I ran an extension cord from the outlet to the door and secured it permanently. My wife prefers using the pushbutton to operate the door and had me replace the buttons that came with it. I purchased larger ones that were easier for her to operate. There is a button in the garage and another in the house so it can be operated from either side.
Configuring a timer
The opener can be set in a variety of ways. We first set it up so you had to push it to open and then push again to close. After a few days, we decided to go on a timer. Now, the door opens and a 30 second timer keeps it open. If either button is pushed while it is open the 30 second timer starts over. You can set the duration of the timer to be longer if needed, but I did not want it too long, especially on cold winter days.
Additional security
One option I did not use was the electric strike plate. One of these would just wire in to a contact on the controller of the opener and allow the door latch to move through the plate when the door is opening and then keep the door secured when closed. Since this door is in the garage and already secured by the main garage door, I did not see the need for it. The motor holds the door securely shut. If you are putting one of these systems on an exterior door that would need to be secured, you’ll need to include one of these strike plates.
