This is specifically about cushions I have tried or am using with my Permobil power chair.

I started with and am using the ROHO Quadtro Select cushion. I liked it okay to start with. But when I started using the foot control, I needed to change to a cushion with firmer support under the knees. We had a used JAY cushion from a local agency which had foam around the front and an air cushion for my rear. I really liked it because it supported my legs firmly which made it easier to use my foot control.

After I no longer could use the foot control, I went back to the Quadtro. I was not very comfortable to start with. Our chair tech had us try a ROHO Contour Select cushion. This seemed to work better for a while.

Eventually, I went back to the Quadtro. We had another tech come over to help with Ability Drive installation. He recommended removing more air from the cushion. It seemed counter intuitive at the time, but it worked. I have been sitting comfortably ever since.

Here are the recommended inflation instructions.

Make sure the compartment lock is on green. If it’s on red, only one front quarter section will inflate.
Inflate the cushion until it starts to crown.
Let the air out by keeping the valve.
Once the air is done escaping, close the valve.

Red or green?

I recommend using green while you’re sitting in the chair. This lets the air in the cushion move around and adapt to your position.

The red setting is primarily used for transfers. It makes the cushion more stable and reduces the risk of a fall.
