Immersion blender

When Steve was no longer able to swallow his medicine (even with a spoonful of sugar), we had to crush his medication to give it to him in his feeding tube. We started using a hand crusher, but we had issues with some of the meds getting stuck in the tube. We saw a video of another caregiver using an immersion blender. We found that it reduces tube clogs and prep time.

Description

We fill a measuring cup with water. Then we add the tablets, open and dump in the capsules, and add liquids or syrups. Blend well and pour into the feeding tube.

There are a couple of things to watch for.

  • Some medications create a lot of foam. Annoying, but still works.
  • Some tablets turn to paste when exposed to water. We found that very frustrating. We fought through it. Also consider asking your pharmacist for a different formulation.
